ENS Governance Token Skyrockets 72% Following Vitalik Buterin’s Praise

In a surprising turn of events, the governance token of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) experienced a remarkable surge of 72% on January 3. The catalyst behind this surge was Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s commendation of the ENS platform. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Buterin expressed his enthusiasm, declaring the Ethereum Name Service as “super important.” He emphasized the necessity for the platform to remain accessible and affordable to all users, especially those operating on layer-2 networks.

Buterin’s Vision for Layer-2 Networks and ENS Integration

Buterin articulated his vision, urging all layer-2 networks, including Optimism, Arbitrum, and Polygon, to work on trustless, merkle-proof-based CCIP resolvers. The goal is to enable ENS subdomains to be registerable, updateable, and readable directly on layer-2 networks. This endorsement had an immediate impact on the ENS token’s value, propelling it from a yearly low of $8.50 to an eight-month high of $14.70, according to CoinMarketCap data. Although the price has since stabilized, it remains elevated at $12.90 at the time of this publication.

ENS Token’s Rollercoaster Journey

It’s worth noting that ENS reached its all-time high of $74.25 on November 28, 2021, coinciding with the broader crypto market downturn that led to a sustained industry-wide bear market. The Ethereum Name Service, known for simplifying crypto transactions, allows users to acquire a “.eth” domain name, replacing the conventional complex string of alphanumeric characters in wallet addresses.

Buterin’s Proposal for a More Inclusive ENS

In September 2022, Buterin proposed a significant change to the ENS landscape – a 3% tax on ENS domain names, commonly referred to as the “Harberger” tax proposal. This proposal aimed to discourage domain name hoarding by early users seeking to maximize profits. Buterin believed that such a tax could foster wider adoption and contribute to a more decentralized ownership structure of ENS addresses.

In conclusion, the recent surge in the ENS governance token showcases the market’s responsiveness to influential endorsements, especially when it comes from figures like Vitalik Buterin. As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, the integration of layer-2 networks with ENS addresses may pave the way for enhanced usability and accessibility within the Ethereum ecosystem.
