Australians will be able to pay with cryptocurrency at service stations and convenience stores in South Australia by the middle of this year, as private businesses cautiously embrace digital currency payments. According to The Australians, On The Run (OTR), a well-known convenience shop chain, will soon allow all of its customers south of the border to pay with Bitcoin and other digital currencies.
Patrons will be able to use more than 30 cryptocurrencies to pay for gasoline, snacks, and even a foot-long Subway sandwich. OTR has also launched a number of locations in Victoria, although it’s unclear whether they’ll take digital currency payments.
Other businesses that operate alongside OTR sites, such as Subway and Oporto, will be able to take use of the new payment method. At its Subway, Oporto, and Smokemart outlets, OTR’s parent company, the Peregrine Corporation, one of South Australia’s largest privately held enterprises, will accept bitcoin. When the system is fully operational in July, it will be the country’s largest retailer accepting such payments in-store.
OTR will become Australia’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer to accept digital currency as part of a partnership with Singapore-based Crypto.com. Last November, the company made waves when it announced that it had acquired the rights to rebrand the Staples Center in Los Angeles as “Crypto.com Arena.” This is the company’s second partnership in Australia, following a multi-year deal with the Adelaide Football Club announced in January.
