AMC Theatres accepts payments in SHIB and DOGE

AMC theatres have good news for all movie fans who want to pay in cryptocurrency for their tickets. AMC, the largest movie theatre chain in the United States, has added two meme-inspired cryptocurrencies, Shiba Inu ($SHIB) and Dogecoin ($DOGE), as payment options a week before they were supposed to go live.

AMC’s CEO, Adam Aron, revealed the move in a tweet to his over 240,000 followers, explaining that the movie theatre chain now accepts both DOGE and SHIB for online payments. The CEO expresses gratitude to BitPay, a cryptocurrency payment processor.

On March 19, the corporation had planned to introduce the meme-inspired coins as a payment mechanism, but the move was made ahead of schedule. Last year, AMC introduced bitcoin payments for movie tickets and snacks, and stated it was looking into “how else AMC may join in this developing cryptocurrency environment.”

The company opted to include DOGE payments after Aaron polled 140,000 people on Twitter, with 68.1 percent saying it should “for sure” list DOGE. BitPay has also recently assisted 1st Energy, an Australian energy company, in accepting cryptocurrency payments, including the meme-inspired currencies DOGE and SHIB. BitPay was founded in 2011 and introduced support for SHIB last year. These developments follow the addition of support for SHIB by prominent digital payments network Wirex, which has over 4.5 million customers and allows them to spend dozens of currencies at over 80 million places worldwide.
