According to CBC news, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared that he will remove emergency powers that were used to freeze $8 million from 210 bank accounts linked to the ‘Freedom Convoy’ marchers.
On February 24, Trudeau claimed in a televised press conference that “we’re ready to confirm that the situation is no longer an emergency” and that his exceptional powers given under the Emergencies Act will be terminated. Freedom Convoy activists have been blocking streets and marching in front of Ontario’s Parliament Hill since last month, calling for the repeal of Covid mandates and restrictions. As a result of the Emergencies Act, the accounts were frozen. On February 23, the Trudeau government began unfreezing bank accounts.
After demonstrators were denied access to traditional crowdfunding platforms such as GoFundMe and GiveSendGo, they turned to Tallycoin to raise funds in Bitcoin, resulting in a total of 21 BTC worth about $902,000 by the end of the event.
