After a Super Bowl splurge, cryptocurrency applications skyrocket in popularity

After a Super Bowl ad featured digital assets, crypto applications soared to the top of the App Store download charts in the United States.

The Super Bowl LVI match between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams saw two of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, FTX and Coinbase, fight for attention. Coinbase’s app rose from 186th to second rank in the App Store. After airing advertising during the big game, FTX-owned Blockfolio and eToro, the financial app, both jumped up the ranks. 

Coinbase’s minute-long advertisement included a QR code bouncing across the screen, inviting viewers to join in a massive contest, with over $100 million in incentives for the crypto community due this year. Coinbase’s website momentarily went down shortly after the commercial aired.

Larry David, the comedian, appeared in FTX’s advertisement. In the two-minute movie, David rejects several of history’s most important innovations, including the wheel, a fork, and a toilet. He is eventually introduced to the FTX app, and he says: “No, I don’t believe so. And I’m never incorrect about anything.”
