Vatican AI Expert Friar Benanti Advocates for Ethical AI Governance

January 18, 2024 – Friar Paolo Benanti, a Franciscan monk, and the Vatican’s leading expert on artificial intelligence (AI), has emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in the development and deployment of AI technologies. In a recent statement reported by the Associated Press, Benanti described AI as an “absolutely positive” outcome of human intellect and creativity, yet he highlighted the urgent need for ethical governance to accompany its advancement.

With a background in engineering and a doctorate in moral theology, Benanti serves as an adviser to the Pope on technology ethics. He has been instrumental in shaping the Vatican’s stance on AI, reflected in the Pope’s comprehensive 3,400-word letter issued on December 15, warning of the technology’s potential dangers.

As a member of the United Nations Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence and a leader in an AI commission advising the Italian government, Benanti’s influence extends beyond the ecclesiastical sphere. His primary concerns revolve around the governance of AI, specifically its societal application and the “right level of use.”

Highlighting the risks of AI in eroding social cohesion and human coexistence, Benanti calls for “proper governance” of the technology. He stresses that this is an ethical imperative, requiring cooperation at both national and international levels. In his 2024 annual peace message, he urged global leaders to establish and maintain an international treaty to guarantee the ethical utilization of AI.

Benanti acknowledges the vast potential of AI, citing its capability to drastically reduce medical costs and expand healthcare access. However, he cautions against the use of non-inclusive data, which could lead to biased and unequal outcomes.

Echoing Benanti’s sentiments, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has also recognized AI’s potential to create a more equitable world. Gates has spoken about the technology’s ability to address global challenges and promote fairness.

As AI continues to evolve, Benanti’s call for ethical oversight reflects a growing consensus among experts and leaders about the need for responsible and conscientious development of this transformative technology.
