Despite the fact that NFTs are a controversial topic in the gaming world, Valve CEO Gabe Newell has publicly complimented the technology and outlined the possible benefits of combining it with triple A gaming.
In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Gabe Newell’s company owns Steam, the digital game distribution powerhouse, and in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Newell was eager to draw a line in the sand between NFT technology and the people who are now utilising it.
He emphasised that fundamental elements like distributed ledgers, the concept of digital ownership, and shared universes are “all quite plausible” and should not be overlooked. He stated that it is necessary to draw a clear distinction between the underlying technology and the actors who use that technology. It’s like if a chemist looks at nitrocellulose and thinks, “Oh, sure, we can do some very fascinating stuff with that,” he added.
However, the people in the gaming space tend to be involved in a lot of illicit activities and questionable conduct. So it’s far more about the actors than the underlying technology or the logic of what we’re doing, he concluded.
