A massive volcanic explosion at the Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano struck shockwaves through the Kingdom of Tonga on Friday.
Following the initial eruption, other eruptions occurred, resulting in a tsunami that hit Tongatapu, Tonga’s biggest island.
In the midst of the challenges, crypto enthusiasts expressed their sympathies and pledged to give Bitcoin (BTC) to aid rescue efforts. Bitcoin supporter and former Tongan legislator, Lord Fusitu’a, has been urged to put up a wallet address where people may give bitcoins to Tonga’s relief funds by Twitter user @onairblair.
People began fleeing to higher ground as waves of up to 1.2 metres (nearly 4 feet) covered highways and houses. There have been no recorded casualties as of this writing. On the other hand, contamination of the air and water is now one of the most pressing problems for humanitarian agencies.
Lord Fusitu’a said that the country’s finances might benefit from using geothermal energy from the volcanoes to fuel Bitcoin mining companies. “Each volcano generates 95,000 megawatts at all times,” Lord Fusitu’a says, “leaving much to spare.” The nation has 21 volcanoes. The lord points out that a single volcano may produce $2,000 in bitcoin each day, which will be distributed to Tongan families.
According to the former congressman, the country is planning to follow El Salvador’s lead and declare Bitcoin legal money.
