The Australian Football League (AFL) has signed a deal with Crypto.com to support its women’s league, marking it as the first big crypto sports sponsorship.
The agreement is worth over $25 million over the next five years, a significant boost from the AFL’s current $18.5 million sponsorship arrangement with Toyota. Crypto.com is a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange that provides digital wallets and cryptocurrency-backed debit cards.
This will be Crypto.com’s first sponsorship of an Australian sports team. It will also be the first time the AFL has sponsored an elite women’s sports championship on a global scale, a milestone that AFL Executive General Manager Customer and Commercial Kylie Rogers says she is “proud” to be a part of.
According to Crypto.com general manager Asia & Pacific, Karl Mohan, the firm was drawn to Australia because of the comparatively large percentage of women interested in cryptocurrency.
“Our most recent consumer analysis in Australia found that more than half (53 per cent) of crypto investors were females,” he stated.
CNBC published a poll in August that indicated that women are still less than half as likely as men to invest in cryptocurrencies, with 16 per cent of males investing compared to 7 per cent of females.
