Unlike most of the cryptocurrency community, Ripple’s chief technology officer, David Schwartz, is not impressed with Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Schwartz believes the billionaire will continue to make people “dumber” about freedom of speech.
Musk believes that the main motive for his purchase of Twitter was to restore free speech to the social media network. Many people are concerned that now that he owns Twitter, it will become unusable due to an inflow of trolling, abuse and heinous propaganda.
While crypto CEOs and influencers have been swamped with cringeworthy tweets applauding the fact that the world’s richest man has transformed a prominent social media platform into his personal playground, some members of the community have had the audacity to call out the apparent hypocrisy. “As long as the proper individual is in control, is authoritarianism acceptable?” Hasu, a bitcoin researcher, tweeted it.
Musk’s monitor document indicates that he is a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” who dislikes free speech in any form. He personally cancelled a blogger’s Tesla order in 2016 due to a “impolite” assessment. Musk also asked China’s language authorities to censor critics.
Given that China accounts for about a quarter of Tesla’s total revenue, some are concerned that Musk’s acquisition of Twitter would strengthen the country’s propaganda machine. In a recent tweet, billionaire Jeff Bezos poke at Musk in a tweet, claiming that the surprise purchase will give China more power over “the city square”.
While Musk’s Twitter acquisition is expected to close without much regulatory scrutiny, Bezos, who has been publicly fighting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk for years, may complicate things by promoting the alarming narrative about global impact.
