North Korea found responsible for Axie Infinity hack

According to blockchain sleuth Chainalysis, the Lazarus Group, a famous cybercrime group believed to be managed by the North Korean government, has been linked to the $625 million Ronin Network attack.

The Ethereum address that was involved in the historic security breach is now on the list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) kept by the US Department of Treasury. The address under issue received 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC tokens. At the time of this writing, the address is holding $445 million of Ether.

Ronin, an Ethereum sidechain built for the popular play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, revealed a massive security breach in late March, which might be one of the most expensive hacking incidents to date.

Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity, raised $150 million earlier in April to compensate the victims of the breach.

Chainalysis reported in early January that North Korean hackers stole $400 million in cryptocurrencies last year, with Ethereum accounting for the vast majority of the amount.

Many of the attacks were carried out by the Lazarus Group, which has been linked to North Korea’s primary intelligence bureau.
