NFTs are not classified as art by Wikipedia editors

Wikipedia editors decided that they have slightly different views on NFTs. They are against classifying NFTs as a kind of art and agreed to put the matter on hold for now.

A survey and discussion on the platform at the end of December focused on the most expensive art sales by living artists, as well as whether NFT art transactions should be regarded as “art sales” or “NFT sales.”

“Wikipedia can’t be in the business of deciding what is and isn’t art,” editor “jonas” explained. “That’s why, whether they’re art or not, placing NFTs on their own list makes things a lot easier.”

Much of the discussion centred on whether an NFT accurately depicted the art or was only a token in comparison to the underlying art. On the definitions, the editors were split, with some feeling there was a lack of reliable evidence from which to make judgments.
