Tesla CEO Elon Musk doesn’t seem to be a fan of Twitter’s new non-fungible token (NFT) integration. In his Friday morning tweet, Musk criticized Twitter for spending engineering resources on NFT integration and not doing enough to curb spam on social media sites.
“This is annoying,” he wrote. “Twitter is spending engineering resources on this operating system, but crypto scammers are hosting spambot blocking parties on every thread !?”
Recently, Twitter has begun to offer users access to NFT profile images (PFPs). Some user accounts have already included a hexagonal avatar that displays NFT images. Twitter has revealed that the images are part of a collection validated at the NFT marketplace OpenSea.

Musk’s criticism of Twitter’s NFT ventures is likely because of the presence of fake accounts impersonating Tesla’s CEO and other celebrities to promote crypto prizes. In 2020, one such fake account was able to steal USD 2 million from unsuspecting victims using Musk’s name. Four444 scammers disguised as MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor recently stole more than USD 1 million in Bitcoin from individuals.
This issue isn’t limited to Twitter, as scammers use similar tactics on government websites and several other social media platforms such as YouTube. Twitter’s NFT integration is currently only available to members of the social media company’s Twitter Blue subscription service.
