Meta CEO Zuckerberg launches digital clothes store in Metaverse

Meta announced the launch of a designer digital clothes store in its metaverse, where users would be able to buy clothing for their avatars.

With the rising popularity of Metaverse, many companies are joining these trends. Companies have begun to integrate their businesses with the metaverse, an alternative and digital take on our world, to maximise their profit. Luxury clothing and fashion brands such as Gucci, Prada, and Balenciaga have already ventured into the metaverse. Meta, previously known as Facebook, announced the debut of the “Meta Avatars Store,” a digital clothes store that would allow users to dress their metaverse avatars in clothing from various brands.

On June 18, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of “Meta Avatars Store,” a digital designer clothing store. With this launch, Meta plans to become an open marketplace where developers may build and sell apparel. According to Zuckererg, the new fashion outfit options will help users to express themselves through their avatars.

Zuckerberg made the following announcement on Instagram Live with Eva Chen who is the VP of Instagram’s fashion partnership. He stated:

“We’re launching our Avatars Store on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger so you can buy digital clothes to style your avatar. Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy. I’m excited to add more brands and bring this to VR soon too.”

‘Meta Avatars Store’ will be available for Meta’s avatars on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram starting this week.  Digital creations by Prada, Balenciaga,  and Thom Browne will also be featured in this store. However, the cost of each item of clothing is still unknown. The stores will open next week in Canada, US, Thailand, and Mexico.

Earlier this year, Meta launched the 3D avatars feature on Instagram, as well as new avatars for Facebook and Messenger. Thanks to the update, avatars now have more expressions, faces, skin tones, and accessibility devices. The same avatar can now be used across all Meta platforms, including virtual reality.

However, experts predict that Meta’s journey to attract users into the metaverse will be difficult. Zuckerberg is well aware that this early venture into the metaverse will be costly. In May, he predicted that the company would lose a “substantial amount of money” over the next three to five years as a result of the shift.
