Greenidge negotiates with regulators, its permit renewal suffers a delay

The final judgement on crypto miner Greenidge’s air permit renewal application has been postponed by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation On March 25, Greenidge wrote to the EPA, claiming that their Dresden factory complied with all state environmental standards.

Greenidge requested new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction measures in a letter dated March 25. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said on Thursday that it will begin studying them.

Greenridge requested two conditions to be added to the permission in his letter. First, by the end of 2025, its Dresden facility will have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from the present authorised level. Second, by 2035, the plant must be carbon-free.

Greenidge claims that it complies with the CLCPA already. The business claimed that its 106-megawatt Dresden plant contributed just “a fraction” of New York’s energy output and that it had cut the plant’s overall upstream and onshore GHG emissions by nearly 70% relative to the CLCPA’s 1990 baseline.

The DEC’s verdict has been postponed several times as the facility has drawn the attention of environmentalists and the general public. The DEC has received about 4,000 letters in response to the permit and will continue to evaluate them over the coming months.

With an increasing number of miners establishing operations in New York, state legislators are attempting to pass legislation. It would impose a freeze on new licences for certain types of mining facilities that aim to utilise carbon-based fuel.
