With two files before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the English Premier League (EPL), one of the most-watched sports leagues in the world, has become the latest entity to dive into the metaverse (USPTO).
On June 6, licenced trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis reported the Premier League’s foray into the metaverse via his Twitter account. Along with the “loving cup trophy” emblem, the application includes the league’s name and “lion head” logo.
Michael Kondoudis tweeted the following:
The trademark application was filed on June 1, 2022, and the USPTO determined that it met all of the requirements.
As crypto use rises among clubs and players, the Premier League is looking to manage financial and crypto services relating to clubs, football players, officials, and others. Football clubs and cryptocurrency companies have been increasing their sponsorship and commercial ties.
Each of the Premier League’s 20 clubs has a deal with a cryptocurrency startup. Arsenal and Manchester City, for example, have partnered with fan token company Socios to produce their own tokens. Chelsea just signed a sponsorship agreement with cryptocurrency business WhaleFin.
In addition, the NFL’s trademark application covers virtual apparel, footwear, and sports equipment. NFTs, fan tokens, and merchandising have all been used by football clubs and players to increase fan interaction. Fans can also earn incentives and fan tokens by visiting the clubs’ websites.
