The French president is known for his desire to turn his country into a “startup nation” that welcomes innovative technology and attracts talent and cash. Emmanuel Macron stated his support for Web 3.0 and the Metaverse when campaigning for his second presidential attempt, while emphasising that public-sector regulation is vital to ensure the sector’s long-term viability.
Macron, proud of made-in-France crypto unicorns like Ledger and Sorare, intends to boost Europe’s Metaverse competitiveness by gaining technological independence from American and Chinese behemoths. He also stated that the idea of creating a “dematerialized museum of French history through digital historiography” would be welcomed in France.
Macron’s belief in Web 3
In a recent interview, the presidential contender saw Web 3 as a chance for Europe to restore its technological leadership.
At that point, Macron argued for a concept known as the “European Metaverse,” claiming that France has a long history of being a prominent participant in digital gaming, with various talents working in the Metaverse and blockchain technology. Europe might play a key role in the Metaverse if it invests in the technological infrastructure required for the next generation of the Internet.
The president emphasised the socioeconomic risks associated with the rapid adoption of new digital technology. Though France has the assets and talents for the Metaverse, he claims that the rate of technological advancement has created a “huge centrifugal force” between those who master the codes of digital technology and those who are left out. He also asked the government to adopt an NFT-focused policy for regulatory organisations.
