Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, has decided not to go to the Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami because of “unforeseen circumstances.” He said that he needs to spend all of his time at home.
In the letter sent out by the organisers of the event, he did not specify what those circumstances were, but he did remark, “I shall have to be on another flank in the struggle for freedom.”
El Salvador is now engaged in a brutal war with criminal groups known as “maras.” On March 27, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly suspended constitutional rights for 30 days after 62 people were slain in murders linked to a local mara.
In the previous 11 days, El Salvador’s National Police had detained 6,894 gang members. Bukele said in his letter that he had the “sincere hope” of making “another declaration, another small contribution in our war for the liberation of money.”
Bukele announced his plans to make bitcoin (BTC) legal tender in El Salvador during the Bitcoin 2021 conference last June. This year’s statement was expected to include a status report on the country’s plans to sell $1 billion in bitcoin bonds.
