Digital yuan transactions are on the rise, reaching USD11.24 billion last year

At the end of 2021, the last transaction value of the digital yuan reached 87.565 billion yuan (USD 11.238 billion) as announced by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) on Tuesday. Have a look at the highlights of Digital Yuan:

  • The latest aggregate has increased by 140 percent compared to the last published in the month of October. 
  • According to PBOC, the number of personal digital yuan wallets increased by 86.4 percent over the same period to 261 million. 
  • China’s Digital Currency (eCNY) is touted as the most advanced Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) issued by the world’s major countries. From 10th October, there have been four digital yuan airdrops from October 22 to December 31- two in Beijing, one in Qingdao, one in Haikou. 
  • Three of the four airdrops in Beijing and Qingdao focused on distributing digital sources to public transport in the form of coupons. 
  • The upcoming Winter Olympics are expected to be the hottest showcase for Digital Yuan, but due to covid-19’s concerns, the event has stopped selling public tickets.
