According to Bloomberg, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has delayed a decision on whether to allow Greenidge Generation to continue to operate power plants in Dresden for bitcoin mining. Bloomberg cited a spokesperson as having informed that the delay would help NYSDEC to complete its review, along with public commentary.
According to the report, a decision that was expected to come by March 31 will come two months later than originally planned. Last year, the Bitcoin miner applied for a permit renewal for the factory for the first time. Greenidge’s system operator said on January 16 that due to the high demand for electricity from the recent cold weather, the company has temporarily reduced its cryptocurrency mining operations in Dresden on January 15 to supply all its generating capacity to independent New York-based companies.
On December 2, 2021, US Senator Elizabeth Warren in her detailed letter questioned the environmental impact of Greenidge Generation (GREE) bitcoin mining operations in New York City. The senator later targeted six additional cryptocurrency miners and questioned their power consumption too.
