Chinese authorities have imprisoned four people on suspicion of kidnapping one person and demanding “hundreds of bitcoins” as a ransom payment. While the alleged kidnapping occurred in the Philippines, cooperation between the two countries resulted in the arrest and eventual sentencing of the Chinese kidnappers.
Four Chinese citizens have been imprisoned after being accused of kidnapping and demanding bitcoin as ransom, according to China’s Embassy in the Philippines two of the accused, Liu and Zhang, were sentenced to eight and twelve years in prison respectively. Cong and Jia, the remaining two, were sentenced to life in prison.
According to the Embassy’s statement, the four are suspected of kidnapping an individual identified as “Su” in the Philippines in August 2019. The kidnappers demanded “hundreds of bitcoins” for Su’s safe return, which is more than $3.1 million or more than 20 million yuan.
The Embassy and domestic law enforcement launched a manhunt for Su’s kidnappers as a result of the kidnapping. The four accused were eventually apprehended and brought to justice, according to the statement, in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Embassy reiterated the Chinese Government zero tolerance for all illegal and criminal activities, including online gambling, telecoms fraud, and kidnappings, in the same statement. In addition, in a warning to Chinese citizens living in the Philippines, the Embassy stated that the Chinese government’s cooperation with its counterpart will ensure that all Chinese lawbreakers in the Philippines are prosecuted.
