Following the cancellation of a GoFundMe fundraising for Canadian truckers protesting COVID-19 regulations, a group of Canadians has turned to Bitcoin to gather funds (BTC).
The campaign had received more than $9 million in donations prior to the ban. Since then, GoFundMe has announced that the remaining $9 million will not be distributed to the Freedom Convoy 2022 campaign because it has allegedly breached its guidelines, claiming that the “peaceful March has now become an occupation.”
All donors can receive a complete refund until February 19, 2022, with the remaining monies going to “existing charity vetted by GoFundMe,” according to GoFundMe. As a result, the truckers are unable to access the monies, prompting a group of Canadians to take it upon themselves to gather funds for the drivers using alternative methods, with the group opting for Bitcoin.
The Bitcoin network is not controlled by a single body because it is decentralised. Furthermore, the network’s native currency, Bitcoin, can be sent peer-to-peer between any sender and receiver with a Bitcoin address. The campaign can receive all Bitcoins directly into wallets using Tallycoin, and they keep custody of the keys.
It’s a wrap for this story.
