Cosmos is a network and tool platform for building interoperable blockchains. Its primary chain, Cosmos Hub, serves as a central ledger for Zones of compatible blockchains. Each Zone is fully configurable, allowing developers to create their own cryptocurrency with their own block validation settings and other features.
The Cosmos SDK, which offers the foundations for developing a Cosmos blockchain, is used to establish these Zones. Tendermint Core, the Cosmos SDK’s default consensus layer, provides a validator-based consensus mechanism that may be used across multiple Cosmos blockchains. Each Zone, on the other hand, has complete control over how its validators are chosen.
The blockchain chooses 100 validators from the top set of nodes, staking ATOM, the blockchain’s utility token, for the Cosmos Hub mainnet. Each validator is allocated voting power according to the quantity of ATOM staked. Following that, a leader validator suggests additional blocks for others to vote on. Successful blocks offer a block reward that is distributed to the validator and shared with users who have staked ATOM in their chosen validator.
