According to Aid for Ukraine, a collaborative operation founded by the Ukrainian government, FTX, Everstake, and Kuna to collect crypto donations for the country, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated $5 million in ETH to Ukraine.
Despite the size of the donation, Buterin did not make a public statement about it, according to the company. The genesis of the transfer, the Ethereum Name Service domain name “vitalik.eth,” was finally linked to him. Aid for Ukraine received half of the $5 million in donations, while Unchain Fund, a bitcoin charity organisation formed by blockchainKU advocates to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainians, received the other half.
The amount of documented crypto donations delivered to the Ukrainian government, military, and charities has topped $133 million, according to Cointelegraph data. The Unchain Fund has raised more than $10 million in total, with NEAR tokens and ETH accounting for the majority of contributions. The rate of donations, though, appears to have slowed.
The total tracked crypto donations to Ukraine increased from $37 million to $108 million between February 28 and March 9. Some have speculated that interest in such ventures has diminished, particularly since the Ukrainian government cancelled a planned airdrop.
