The Secret Service of the United States has established a cryptocurrency awareness centre. As part of its public awareness campaign, the new platform will display “the most current work done by the agency to oppose the illicit use of digital assets, as well as give public awareness information on digital asset security and how to keep them safe.”
The Secret Service was founded in 1865 as a bureau within the Treasury Department to counter widespread counterfeiting. Presently it is part of the Department of Homeland Security. As the assistant director of the Secret Service’s Office of Investigations, Jeremy Sheridan, said:
Our job is to fight crimes against the country’s financial systems, and that includes both informing the public about how digital assets work and working with them to find, arrest, and prosecute those who are involved in crimes with digital assets.
The Secret Service and the Treasury Department work together to look into and “directly address the financial incentives of cybercrime through asset seizures and other actions.”
