Debbie Bonello, a local artist, was commissioned to make an oil painting of a car with the letters ETH on the license plate. The painting was to be burned after it was completed, in front of Bonello’s friends and family, as well as members of the local and national Malta government.
Photographer Matthew Mirabelli digitized the painting and any supporting sketches before they were ceremonially destroyed and minted as an NFT. This NFT, as well as the legal ownership rights to the actual ETH number plate under Malta law, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Although NFTs bundled with asset rights have been done before, ETH in Mellieha went to great lengths to ensure that this initiative was legal, enlisting the help of one of Malta’s top law firms to design the terms and conditions and monitor the final transfer.
Regardless of whether they own a car or are a resident of Malta, Mamo TCV has confirmed with Transport Malta that whoever wins the auction will be entitled to ownership of the personalized number plate.
