In collaboration with OneOf, a green NFT marketplace, eBay has unveiled its first-ever NFT collection. eBay has joined the ranks of Meta, Twitter, Adidas, Visa, and a slew of other global corporations in pursuing NFTs.
In a Monday press release, the global e-commerce behemoth said that it has released its first NFT collection through a strategic cooperation with the multi-chain NFT marketplace OneOf. The “Genesis” collection will include animated 3D reconstructions of great sportsmen from Sports Illustrated, one of the most prominent sports magazines in the United States.
The NFT collection’s initial drop is already available for purchase on eBay. It shows animated Sports Illustrated covers of Wayne Gretzky, the former Canadian record-breaking ice hockey star. “I was grateful to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated forty years ago; it was a major time in my life,” Gretzky said in a statement, adding that he was “proud” to be included in the collection. With prices starting at $10, eBay’s initial drop comprises 13 limited edition NFT packs in a four-tiered system with varying rarities, including green, gold, platinum, and diamond tiers.
Unlike most other NFTs, which are normally offered in exchange for other cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, the Genesis NFTs on eBay are sold in US dollars. Additionally, the sales will take place via eBay’s Web2 platform rather than on-chain, and the assets will be handed to their respective buyers via a redemption code issued via chat and email.
eBay vice president, Dawn Block, said the following on the company’s NFT debut:
“NFTs and blockchain technology are transforming the collectibles industry, and aficionados are increasingly seeing them as an investment potential. eBay has partnered with OneOf to make rare NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors around the world. This demonstrates our dedication to providing eBay shoppers and sellers with high-passion, high-value items.”
The NFTs will be hosted on the Ethereum scaling solution Polygon and accessible for resale on the OneOf marketplace, according to eBay’s collection description.
