In a sponsorship agreement struck with iGaming Token Crypto Snack on Monday, La Liga football club Espanyol confirmed it will accept crypto payments starting next season. Espanyol has become the first club in Spain to accept cryptocurrency payments.
The Crypto Snack, which debuted on the Binance Smart Chain, is the first iGaming token to aim to combat climate change by allocating 10% of all Crypto Snack tokens to programmes that help save the world.
For the next three years, payments in a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and SNACK, will be accepted at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium in Barcelona. The deal also involves the Crypto Snack logo being included on the club team’s uniform.
Antoni Alegre, the club’s marketing director stated:
“We secured an arrangement for the duration of the season and three more years that includes the presence of Crypto Snack in the training shirt and in the first team shorts. We are a forward-thinking organisation that aspires to be a hub for the blockchain community.”
The club’s chief executive officer, Mao Ye Wu, stated that they are aiming to implement cryptocurrency as a payment method in the stadium next season. “We appreciate everything that technology offers to the game of football.”
Crypto Snacks’ chief executive officer, Stuart Morrison, said Espanyol was the ideal partner. “We are ecstatic to be here and to sign the first agreement in the sector in La Liga,” said the team. We wish to collaborate and grow as a team.
The collaboration underscores the growing use of bitcoin and blockchain technologies in the sports business, not just in Europe but globally. The use of crypto is growing, from sports-based NFTs to fantasy games and ticket payments.
