Madonna has purchased a Bored Ape non-fungible token (NFT) worth more than $500,000. In an Instagram post on March 24, the 63-year-old singer revealed she had entered the metaverse universe by adopting Bored Ape #4988, a cartoon monkey with colourful fur and a “S&M cap.”
In her message, she also congratulated MoonPay, a crypto payments company that has been acquiring large amounts of NFTs on behalf of celebrities since late last year. According to transaction data on OpenSea, MoonPay purchased Madonna’s Bored Ape for 180 ether (about $564,000) last week.
Two days earlier, the business moved the item to a wallet apparently held by Madonna. MoonPay quickly moved Bored Ape #1506 to another wallet. That item—a leopard-furred ape with an eyepatch—has subsequently become rapper Wiz Khalifa’s Twitter profile photo.
The new sponsorships arrive at an exciting time for Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club line. It just launched a new coin and is planning to launch a metaverse game project, in addition to receiving a $450 million investment from venture capitalists earlier this week.
