CryptoNovo, a prominent leader in the non fungible token (NFT) community, said on January 4 that he had been the target of a hack and had therefore lost two CryptoPunks. He sent the following message on Twitter: “I just been hacked!!! Are you kidding me?!?” the user said, attaching a screenshot from OpenSea that showed two CryptoPunks being moved to a different location.
The two CryptoPunks were promptly sold by the attacker, one for 70 Ether ETH (which was equivalent to $88,434 at the time of publishing), and the other for 199 Ether ETH (which was equivalent to $251,404). This suggests that CryptoNovo suffered damages in excess of $300,000 worth of CryptoPunks as a result of the assault.
Meebits, CloneX, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, and Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs were reportedly among the many other non fungible tokens that were removed from the site.
Although it looks that the famous CryptoNovo Punk sporting a green beanie and number 3706 was spared from the assault, it also appears that the owner sold the item. CryptoPunk #3706 was delivered to a totally new address and sold for 75 ETH, which is equivalent to $94,751 at the current exchange rate. This contrasts with the prior NFTs, which were sent to an address that was known to be phishing.
This address has also received goods from the ENS domain known as Thenovoverse.eth, which itself in the past has been the recipient of stuff sent to it via CryptoNovo’s official wallet address. Given these circumstances, it’s possible to draw the conclusion that the owner, and not an intruder, was the one who sold the item in question.
One of the first examples of what is now known as “generative digital art,” CryptoPunks was one of the first NFT collections, which are collections of art pieces created by an algorithm. It was made available to the public in June of 2017, and individual units were minted and distributed to anybody who was willing to pay the minting expenses. In today’s market, a CryptoPunk may be purchased for an average of more than $100,000.
This set has been the impetus for the creation of hundreds of additional generative NFT sets, such as the Bored Ape Yacht Club, the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Meebits, and a host of others.
