DeBridge Finance investigation unveils North Korean hacker group Lazarus as main culprit behind cyberattack

According to multiple sources’ findings on August 6, hackers from North Korea have purportedly discovered a new victim in DeBridge Finance, which is a cross-chain interoperability and liquidity transfer protocol.

Using the initial findings of DeBridge’s investigation, the renowned North Korean hacker ring known as the Lazarus Group was most likely the source of the attempted cyberattack.

Several employees of the DeBridge team were duped into receiving a bogus email that included a PDF file with the heading “New Salary Adjustments.” The email was reportedly written by Alex Smirnov, one of the co-founders of DeBridge.

According to Smirnov, a considerable number of DeBridge’s employees were the recipients of emails sent by the hackers. When the users saw and downloaded the PDF file, the computers were infected with malware that gathers information about the users.

Smirnov claims that hackers from the Lazarus Group used the PDF name “New Salary Adjustments” in previous attacks, and he warned other Web3 teams to keep watchful for similar invasions. Smirnov’s assertions are supported by evidence.

The organisation targets businesses based on cryptocurrencies all across the globe. The latest attack on Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge resulted in the theft of more than $622 million, making it the largest hack in the history of cryptocurrencies.
