CME Group to launch ETH futures options with minimum order size of 50 ETH: Report

According to a report, the CME Group said on August 19 that it would be introducing options contracts with a contract size of 50 ETH for its ether futures. Regulations will need to be reviewed for this activity. On September 12, ether futures options are anticipated to go on the market. Only a few of the current crypto options products offered by the CME Group include the first Bitcoin (BTC) futures contract, introduced in December 2017, Bitcoin options trading products, introduced in January 2020, and “micro-sized Bitcoin and Ether options,” introduced in March 2022.

McCourt also mentioned the imminent Ethereum Merge, which is anticipated to take place on September 15, as one of the driving forces behind the introduction of the new product.

Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equity and FX Products at CME Group, stated:

“As we approach the highly anticipated Ethereum Merge next month, we continue to see market participants turn to CME Group to manage ether price risk. Our new Ether options will offer a wide array of clients greater flexibility and added precision to manage their ether exposure ahead of market moving events.”

McCourt notes that the September and December futures contain 78% of the open interest in micro Ether options, indicating that traders may have started to hedge their risk prior to the anticipated merge date. The average daily trading volume for ether futures climbed by 7% in June and by 41% in July, according to the CME Group. A 7% increase was seen in the same number of contracts for micro ether futures.
